Chuck Yeager was shot down over enemy territory in 1943 but evaded capture. US Army policy dictated that pilots shot down could not fly again, but Yeager appealed directly to General Eisenhower. He flew 64 combat missions in WWII, downing 13 enemy aircraft, including 5 in a single day.
